Nurses Week 2014!

May 6, 2014 by Anna

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
Nurses Week!

I always get really excited about Nurses Week because it’s a chance to a. show appreciation for my fellow comrades out there, b. show some nursing pride and c. treat myself. I do something I rarely do and post every.single.day. of Nurses Week (you can check out all my Nurses Week 2012 posts and Nurses Week 2013 posts, if you want).

This year, I’ve got several of my favorite nursey things to give away! Check the blog every day and enter to win!

Nurses Week 2014
On Wednesday, Paige and I will be linking up and talking about our experiences in getting a nursing job.(This particular topic was requested by Hope who is finishing her Junior year of nursing school). We would LOVE for any of you nurse bloggers out there to link up and share your experiences too!
Also, because I love you, I’ve been doing some research. If you’re a nurse, you’re going to love this:

Nurses Week 2014 Round Up of Promotions/Deals/Giveaways:

  • Enter to win a nurses prize pack from ScrubScriptions! This giveaway is being hosted by Stat Staff Professionals and is going on until May 9! ScrubScriptions is a monthly subscription that mails you new scrubs (you choose the size and color) and a bunch of beauty products! I wish I’d thought of this. :)
  • The Nerdy Nurse is collaborating with Scrubs magazine and having a HUGE GIVEAWAY! Enter to win stuff like scrubs, shoes, an Amazon gift card, and books!
  • Free Cinnabon. Just show them your name badge! (It does say “at participating bakeries only”- which is a shame, because the one here in Boise didn’t do it last year. I’ll keep you posted).
  • Free Coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts. Again, show them your name badge and get a small 16 oz Dunkin’ Dark Roast iced coffee between 4pm and 10pm.
  • 25% off MDpocket products! Use the coupon code: NURWK14 for 25% off your purchase. Users WILL need to be logged onto an MDpocket user profile for the code to verify, but it’s free to create an account. Code expires 5/12/14. Check out my recent review of their products here.
  • 15% off of Figs Scrubs. They’re supposed to be super comfy and incredible. I definitely have plans to try these soon! What I love about them so far: they are manufactured in LA and for every pair of scrubs purchased, they give a pair to a medical professional in an impoverished area of the world!
  • 30% off your whole order of stethoscope charms from CharMED. Use code “SPRING30” and stock up! These things make amazing gifts. They have a brand new charm that came out for nurses week too!
  • $5 off purchase of $25 or more with Nursing Knowledge International. Promo code: LOVENURSES14 (I kind of love this shirt they have).
  • 30% off clothing from New York & Co. If you’re a teacher, this link has tons of freebie’s for Teacher Appreciation Day!

Nurses Week 2013

April 29, 2013 by Anna

How many of you were around for Nurses Week 2012?
If you were following this blog back then, you may remember the my favorite things: nursing edition giveaway… or you might remember the story of Mo and the kidney stone…or perhaps you remember the rad birthday cake I made for Florence Nightingale?
In any case, It’s almost time to celebrate Nurses Week 2013! Here’s the line up:

Nurses Week 2013

May 6th will be all about recognizing nurses who have helped you in the past and encouraging younger nurses with promise. May 7th, think ugly sweater party…except scrubs. If you own them, flaunt them. If you didn’t waste your money on them, share links to the ugliest ones you can find! :) May 8th, I’ll talk about how important humor is in the nursing field. May 9th, I’ll show you the pretty new dansko shoes I’m trying out. May 10th is self explanatory. May 11th will be all about nursing wellness and taking care of yourself. And lastly, May 12th is Florence’s birthday so we’ll be celebrating her.
Feel free to jump in and be involved in your own way or take some of my ideas! Are you excited? I’m excited. :)

Also, May 6-12 is an excellent time to show the nurse in your life that you appreciate them! Thank them, write them a note, or maybe give them a token of your appreciation. Our hospital, for example, will be giving all the nurses a tumbler cup with a cafeteria gift card inside (I know this information because I’m on the nursing council that helped decide on the gift). :)
Fun fact: Halo Branded Solutions even has a whole category of Nurses Week gifts! So if you’re in the market to mass purchase nursing gifts, check them out. :) Below are a few of my favorite from their site:

nurses week gifts
1. hand sanitizer– Nurses hate germs.  And it’s a gel spray! How cool is that?
2. LED egg flashlight– Nurses need flashlights- to check pupils, to get around patient rooms at night, to look for a coiling feeding tube in the back of someone’s throat… super useful.
3. post-it flag/highlighter combo– I’ve taken to highlighting the extra important bits on my patient’s discharge instructions. A pen with a flagging and highlighting combo would be incredible! :)
4. aluminum bottle– Nurses need to stay hydrated! The best way to do that is to have a full bottle of water with you at all times. The last tumbler I got from the hospital fell and broke, this one looks quite durable. :)
5. scrub post-its– nurses will write on anything… like paper towels or their hand. These post-its would do the job a bit better (and comes in 6 colors).
6. the weekender duffel bag– Nurses love bags. My current bag is a tote that happens to be falling apart. (plus this one would be perfect for all my derby gear!)
**disclosure: I was compensated for linking to the site only, all the opinions and content is my own.**
Happy week before Nurses Week!

Blog direction.

January 14, 2014 by Anna

I have been blogging for 4 years, and it hasn’t gotten really serious until the last 2, I’d say. I have amazing readers who inspire me and who I hope are inspired when they come here. Or at least entertained for a moment. :) As ironic as it is (because of the name), my blog really has become more of a nursing blog than anything. And I’m okay with that.
It’s not the sort of nursing blog where you’ll find articles with the newest evidence-based practices. It’s not a blog about technology in nursing, wellness tips, or about the humorous parts of the job. If I had to define it, I’d say it’s a nurses’s personal blog about life inside and outside the hospital.
So. For 2014 you can expect more stuff for nurses. More nursing product reviews. More linkups with Paige and you nurse-bloggers. Another awesome week of blogging in May for Nurses Week (here’s 2012 and 2013 if you want a look). As I write, the part I look forward to the most is hearing what my readers have to say. I love the sense of community having a blog gives you!
And so, as my blog is settling into it’s own little niche, I hope you’ll stick around. Please let me know if there is something more you’d like to see here! And follow on instagram (@anna_the_nurse) where I post more non-nursing stuff than anything. :)
—————————————————————————————-
A little bit about the nurse link-ups if you’re new:
Each month Paige and I pick a theme for nurse-bloggers to write about. We post on the last Wednesday of every month. Linkups are open to nurses, student nurses, aspiring nurses, retired nurses…we’re flexible. :) We follow HIPAA guidelines and do not post any identifying information about patients in our posts. We LOVE when people link up with us!
Our January linkup is all about the essentials. What does a new nurse need when they’re first starting out? What do you wish you’d had in the beginning? What did you get and realize you never used?
